Advance sales have begun for the Phaeton, a car that has been reconceptualized in many technical areas. Volkswagen has chosen its flagship car as the first model to offer a V6 TDI engine, which already satisfies the future Euro 5 standard. New technical innovations of the modified Phaeton include “Front Assist” braking distance reduction, “Side Assist” lane changing assistant, a new DVD navigation system and a modified infotainment system.

The Phaeton V6 TDI: To satisfy emission limits of the Euro 5 standard that becomes mandatory in 2009, one requirement that must be satisfied is an 80 percent reduction in the soot particulate limit compared to the Euro 4 standard. The new Phaeton V6 TDI fulfills this requirement with its common rail direct injection engine. The second generation of the V6 TDI now outputs 171 kW / 233 PS, eight PS more than its predecessor. Nonetheless, the new TDI is satisfied with just 9.6 liters diesel per 100 kilometers. The 450 Nm strong six-cylinder accelerates the Phaeton to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds; its top speed is now 236 km/h.

Volkswagen is offering the Phaeton V6 TDI – all cars equipped with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic – at prices starting at 63,952.45 Euro. Positioned just above it is the 177 kW (241 PS) powerful Phaeton V6 with gasoline engine at a price of 68,014.65 Euro. Of course, V8 and W12 versions are also part of the engine line-up. Regardless of the engine selected, the new Phaeton will continue to available in a long version that adds twelve centimeters of length to the rear seating area.

In the exterior area the further developed generation of Phaeton cars offers chrome accent strips in the front apron and newly designed bi-xenon headlamps. Distinctive here are the new, integrated LED daytime running lamps, as well as adaptive curve and turn lighting.

Other systems being introduced on the Phaeton for the first time include: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with new "Follow to Stop" function, "Front Assist" braking distance reduction, "Side Assist" lane changing assistant and automatic activation of low-beam headlamps during faster freeway driving and rain.

Moreover, the Phaeton is getting a higher-performance DVD navigation system with many new functions, an infotainment system that has similarly been modified, and a new, voice-activated Bluetooth telephone with auxiliary Bluetooth receiver.
